Banks Industrial Group provides API compliant storage tank repairs for the internal and external rehab of tank shells, roofs, and bottoms. We use cold-curing Belzona composite repair systems to safely and rapidly mend damage and leaks resulting from corrosion and tank settlement.

BIG will often perform repairs while the storage tank remains in service. Benefits include:. Storage tank corrosion indicates an increased risk for tank leaks, safety hazards, environmental damage and productivity loss due to shutdown.

Corrosion will often develop in an area hidden from inspection under insulation or within a tank interior where it can eventually deteriorate to a dangerous level. Traditional repair methods such as patch plates for thin-wall and through-wall tank corrosion using hot work can be difficult, time-consuming or precluded by operational circumstances. Hot work adds risk in potentially flammable or explosive environments.

Because of this, weld repairs often require a costly shutdown, emptying, and clean-out of the tank, carrying with it lost productivity costs.

In other instances, operating conditions, complex geometries, availability of replacement parts or the severity of the damage can prohibit welded repairs. Banks Industrial Group offers a safer and time-saving alternative using Belzona polymeric repair compounds. The customer saves time and money while extending the service life of their storage tank asset. Belzona compounds quickly cure at ambient temperature and do not require hot work.

Tank repairs now take place within one or two days — not multiple weeks! If you are using welded steel tanks or bolted steel tanks, corrosion over time is your enemy. No matter how secure your initial containment choices, even the best manufactured steel tanks can experience increasing corrosion and eventual failure over time without regular inspection and preventative maintenance.

Steel storage tanks can also be subject to new regulations and requirements, making repairs, retrofits and upgrades necessary. Welded steel tanks can experience unexpected degradation and loss of service life when tasked to store new products.

Facilities Managers and Engineers have a range of product choices for steel tank repairs. For decades, rubber lining was the only choice for containing certain products, however steam curing applications can be prohibitively expensive, especially on larger tanks. Our DuraChem systems replace rubber lining in many applications. Many bolted and welded steel tanks may be installed with a coating system, which may work well for a period of time.

When tank coatings need to be replaced, facilities managers often consider a lining system as a replacement for an original coating. Coatings have their place when a thin mil, paint-like system is all that is needed. Coatings, like paint, do not have appreciable structural integrity of their own, but in some cases, as part of a system bonded to a substrate, they may meet the needs of a particular job.

In general, linings can provide a longer window of protection for steel tanks. Linings provide their own structural integrity.

In most situations, linings will not disbond as coatings systems can. Disbonding doesn't usually result in a failure of lining systems as it can with coatings. The right lining applied to a properly prepared substrate can eliminate the risk of blistering through osmotic forces. In addition, any puncture to the tank lining during service life is far less likely to spread beyond the intrusion, keeping the damage and repairs contained to that specific spot. Overall, tank linings can offer longer term protection of capital investment with an extended service life.

Regardless of the specific challenges you face with your steel tanks, AmTech can work with you to find the best solution. Our field engineering staff has set the standard for tank inspections and cost-effective repairs for thousands of steel tank and containment challenges throughout North America. When you find puddles of water around your water tank, chances are your water tank rusted and ate through the tank material. A temporary fix may hold for weeks or months, giving you enough time to make arrangements to replace the water tank.

When you find a rust hole in a traditional metal or steel water tank, using sealant may be the solution. Wipe the area with a microfiber cloth to ensure all dust particles and rust are removed from the space you will be working in. Snip the tip off the sealant, making the hole as large as you need it to be to manage the adhesive easily.

Paint the area over and around the sealant once the product is dry; this is highly recommended if your water tank is located outside as exposure to sunlight and the elements can break down the sealant at a rapid rate.

For water tanks inside a building, this step is optional. Corrosion is the main reason water tanks fail. To reduce the chances of rust eating a hole through your tank in the future, check the tank's anode rod annually and replace it if necessary.

The anode rod reduces corrosion of the water tank by taking on the corrosion, keeping the rest of the tank relatively safe from rust. But once the anode rod wears away, the rest of the tank is more susceptible to corrosion and rust holes. Sealants and adhesives are generally harmless when proper directions are followed. Read the directions thoroughly that come with the product.

Empty the water tank to ensure the space around the leaky hole is dry. Step 2. Scrub the area around the hole with a wire brush to remove all the rust and clean the space.

Step 3. Step 4. Recheck the area to make sure you have removed all moisture and dirt before repairing the hole. Repair the Hole. Insert the tube of sealant into the caulking gun. Ensure it is snapped securely into place. Dab the sealant around the area until the space is fully covered with the product. Smear the sealant evenly over the affected area with the putty knife.

Warning Sealants and adhesives are generally harmless when proper directions are followed. For larger leaks in open galvanized stock tanks, either a boiler repair plug or a nut and bolt with two rubber washers and two metal washers can be used.

If a heavy water tank must be moved or lifted to repair a leak, have one or more helpers hold it securely to prevent possible injury from a falling or rolling tank. Galvanized water tanks are relatively sturdy and cheap, making them useful for such applications as watering livestock and storing large amounts of water. The tanks are covered in a coating of zinc, which protects the underlying metal from rust and corrosion. Over time, though, galvanized tanks can still develop leaks.

Rather than discarding a leaking galvanized tank, fix small holes easily and inexpensively using simple tools and items from the hardware store. Hammer flat any sharp edges which are protruding into the inside of the tank around the leaking hole.

Place a small block of wood adjacent to the pinhole leak on the outside of the tank. Scraps from two-by-fours work fine. Drive the nail into the block of wood until the rubber washer on the nail is tightly seated against the metal of the tank, plugging the leak.

Drill the leaking hole to make it smooth and regular. Insert a boiler repair plug into the hole. The toggle bar should be on the inside of the tank and the rubber washer, on the outside. Once in place, the toggle bar will spring back into an open position, securing the plug in place. Tighten the nut on the boiler repair plug until the rubber washer is tightly seated, sealing the leak.

You want to get through the winter as economically as possible, but you have just discovered that your oil tank has a small leak.

In addition to losing your investment in the oil, you may be required to remove and replace the soil contaminated by the oil. You know that fixing the leak will save you money in the long run, but you also want to know a cheap and effective way to plug that leak in the short term.

As soon as you determine you have an oil leak, act quickly to prevent any further contamination of your soil. Pump all the remaining oil out of the tank with a syphon pump. Pump oil into 50 gallon trash containers with lids. Use as many trash containers as necessary. For each area of corrosion, remove rust and wash thoroughly with soap and water. Rinse with water. Sand all corroded areas with rough, then fine-grit sandpaper. Make sure you have removed all instances of corrosion.

Squeeze out equal amounts of patching compound from each of the tubes on the aluminum pie pan. Mix together with paint stirring stick until thoroughly blended. Place mixed patching compound onto all the prepared areas. You can apply it with the paint stirring stick in an even coat or push it into the leak and leave a small bump of patch. Wait the length of time recommended by the manufacturer for the compound to cure. Depending on the product you have chosen, this may vary from 4 to 24 hours.
