When you find puddles of water around your water tank, chances are your water tank rusted and ate through the tank material. A temporary fix may hold for weeks or months, giving you enough time to make arrangements to replace the water tank.
When you find a rust hole in a traditional metal or steel water tank, using sealant may be the solution. Wipe the area with a microfiber cloth to ensure all dust particles and rust are removed from the space you will be working in. Snip the tip off the sealant, making the hole as large as you need it to be to manage the adhesive easily.
Paint the area over and around the sealant once the product is dry; this is highly recommended if your water tank is located outside as exposure to sunlight and the elements can break down the sealant at a rapid rate.
For water tanks inside a building, this step is optional. Corrosion is the main reason water tanks fail. To reduce the chances of rust eating a hole through your tank in the future, check the tank's anode rod annually and replace it if necessary.
The anode rod reduces corrosion of the water tank by taking on the corrosion, keeping the rest of the tank relatively safe from rust. But once the anode rod wears away, the rest of the tank is more susceptible to corrosion and rust holes. Sealants and adhesives are generally harmless when proper directions are followed. Read the directions thoroughly that come with the product.

Drill the leaking hole to make it smooth and regular. Insert a boiler repair plug into the hole. The toggle bar should be on the inside of the tank and the rubber washer, on the outside. Once in place, the toggle bar will spring back into an open position, securing the plug in place. Tighten the nut on the boiler repair plug until the rubber washer is tightly seated, sealing the leak.

In addition to losing your investment in the oil, you may be required to remove and replace the soil contaminated by the oil. You know that fixing the leak will save you money in the long run, but you also want to know a cheap and effective way to plug that leak in the short term.
As soon as you determine you have an oil leak, act quickly to prevent any further contamination of your soil. Pump all the remaining oil out of the tank with a syphon pump. Pump oil into 50 gallon trash containers with lids. Use as many trash containers as necessary. For each area of corrosion, remove rust and wash thoroughly with soap and water. Rinse with water. Sand all corroded areas with rough, then fine-grit sandpaper. Make sure you have removed all instances of corrosion.
Squeeze out equal amounts of patching compound from each of the tubes on the aluminum pie pan. Mix together with paint stirring stick until thoroughly blended. Place mixed patching compound onto all the prepared areas. You can apply it with the paint stirring stick in an even coat or push it into the leak and leave a small bump of patch. Wait the length of time recommended by the manufacturer for the compound to cure. Depending on the product you have chosen, this may vary from 4 to 24 hours.
